Whole-home heat pump systems are the Goldilocks of the HVAC world: To keep homeowners warm in the winter and cool and dry in the summer, they need to be designed, sold, and installed just right. Between determining the thermal demands of a home and ensuring customer satisfaction, you have your work cut out for you.

That’s why Service Fusion partners with Amply Energy, a game-changing platform that integrates augmented reality (AR) technology to streamline your efforts. The innovative software makes it easier than ever to analyze any home’s unique heating needs, enabling HVAC sales reps to provide quick and accurate quotes.

Discover how Amply Energy’s HVAC sales and design software is transforming the in-home sales process—and how tag teaming with Service Fusion software changes the game.

Meet Amply Energy

Established in 2021 in Maine, Amply Energy combines the innovation of a startup with deep HVAC expertise. This team understands contractors because its founders were home electrical contractors.

From Contractors to Software Pros

Measuring for and designing heat pump systems takes hours—and usually a fair bit of manual effort with a tape measure, pad, and pencil. So, the team began crafting a solution that automated the process.

To say it was successful would be an understatement—the group did almost $1 million in projects before it shut the contracting business down and focused solely on the software solution. Amply’s sales software is tailor-made for heat pump contractors to streamline system design through automated measurements and AR visuals.

The result? Better designs and conversations with homeowners.

Tour Amply Augmented Reality

Customers make decisions with their hearts as much as their wallets. And if you can bring them into the design process, it’s easier to create a plan that feels right.

How It Works

Amply’s AR-powered HVAC business software scans different walls to determine heat load requirements for optimal system sizing. Using an iPad Pro, you can visualize equipment placements for both logistics and aesthetics.

Reap the Benefits of AR

“Will this lamp look right in my living room?”

Augmented reality is transforming consumer products, so why not HVAC, too? Amply Energy’s software scans a customer’s home to instantly create a 3D “digital twin.” This lets you size the system, place the equipment, and show your customer the equipment in the real-life space.

This is a huge win for your customers, but what about your business? Amply’s advanced software offers a much-needed lift from both an efficiency and regulatory standpoint.

Time Savings

Design is one of the toughest parts of heat pump services—at least, it used to be. Amply’s HVAC business software expedites home analysis so you can obtain specifications and design a highly accurate system.

Reduced Paperwork

Are you still doing manual calculations and creating drawings after every client’s inspection? Go digital and do it all on-site and in real time on your iPad Pro. Scan each room and dictate notes automatically if you need to!

Ensured Compliance

Help customers save money and ensure system compliance in one fell swoop. Amply’s HVAC business software generates ACCA-approved Manual J load calculations so heat pump designs adhere to construction codes, making it easier to secure permits and obtain rebates and tax credits.

Add Amply to Your HVAC Business Software Solutions

The average homeowner doesn’t understand the intricacies of their HVAC needs—they just know they want to be warm or cool at the right times, and you can help. Win their trust and satisfaction with Amply Energy.

Amply’s HVAC business software stimulates better conversations with homeowners. Bring them into the design and illustrate job quotes with images in context. And take it to the next level with the power dynamic of Amply and Service Fusion!

Service Fusion streamlines business operations with service software, while Amply takes care of system design. After each in-home assessment, email your Service Fusion quote alongside an Amply design document to help customers understand price breakdowns and equipment needs.

Sound like a winning solution? Watch Amply’s 90-second product video and schedule a demo today to amp up your heating system designs.

Providing quality HVAC services is the top goal for any HVAC business. You’re the expert, and your team proves it with effective solutions during every job.

However, although it’s true that what your teams do in the field directly impacts your potential to earn positive ratings and repeat business, it’s not the only way to move the needle.

Building authentic, long-lasting relationships with your customer base is a foolproof way to set yourself up for continued success.

Going beyond simply providing HVAC services to curate an unforgettable customer experience will pay dividends in customer retention, referrals, brand reputation, and more.

So, how do you go the extra mile to foster those relationships and delight your HVAC customers? With the right tools and strategies to empower you.

Let’s dive in.

Efficient HVAC Service Scheduling

Customer relationships begin as soon as someone gets in touch about a job. HVAC software streamlines scheduling, automating the process to ensure a positive customer experience.

Pull in existing customer data.

When a familiar person calls to book an appointment, your business can be ready for them.

HVAC scheduling software automatically pulls in their associated information—including their service history and equipment used—helping call teams to recognize them and personalize their experience.

Schedule the right technician for each job.

You know your team can handle any job, but manually orchestrating who goes where is tough.

Use your HVAC business software to match technicians to tasks based on their skill set or even to customers based on service history. This will help keep customer experience at an A-plus level.

Offer self-service online scheduling.

Drawn-out service windows that last hours are tedious and interfere with customer lives and satisfaction. They have work to get back to, kids to watch over, and lives to live.

By offering self-service scheduling, you give customers the control to book on their own at times that match their needs. If a potential customer is still trying to determine their next move, a text-me-back widget can help start the conversation about service needs, troubleshoot problems, or schedule appointments.

Effective Communication Techniques

Clear communication fosters trust and loyalty with customers.

HVAC business software can help you stay in touch with customers and share real-time progress updates throughout the job lifecycle. However, maintaining consistent communication outside of service relationships is just as important.

After all, you want customers to think of you immediately when they need HVAC support. Staying in touch regularly keeps your business top of mind, making you their go-to choice when a need arises.

Here are a few strategies you can try to level up your customer communication game:

Use content marketing.

Leverage your HVAC expertise to impress your customers with valuable marketing content. Create and share relevant content to both attract and engage your target audience, such as:

Energy-saving tips

HVAC maintenance guides

Pricing comparisons

Content marketing is your chance to not only promote your business but also to educate. It’s your opportunity to establish your authority in the HVAC industry and build trust with current and potential customers.

You can even increase your visibility by incorporating relevant keywords and optimizing for SEO.

Take advantage of social media.

Like your content efforts, social media can bring you closer to customers where they spend the most time online.

Consistently posting on social media about HVAC best practices, industry updates, or even company news pulls your business into consumer conversations. The resulting online visibility keeps your business top of mind, driving engagement when followers like or share your content.

Stay in touch with email marketing.

Email is still a go-to communication channel between business and their customers, alongside text messaging and social media. With devices always in their back pockets, customers are constantly ready to hear from you.

You can use email to stay in touch, send information about your HVAC services, and share perks and discounts that make customers feel valued. But do so with their consent—collecting email addresses via online registration or enrolling them after they’ve scheduled service with you.

Loyalty Programs and Rewards

Free stuff? Yes, please! If you can save money at the pump or earn a free pizza with loyalty rewards points, why can’t you do the same with HVAC services?

Most people are motivated to take action by the prospect of receiving something in return, and your business can ensure both sides win.

Incentivize repeat business.

Implementing a loyalty program helps your business foster long-term relationships with HVAC customers, encouraging them to come back again and again.

You can award specific point values for key actions or scale the program to offer tiered rewards based on continued loyalty. And perks such as discounts or free services can boost engagement and drive business.

Pro Tip: Try integrating loyalty programs with your HVAC business software to keep customer data together and seamlessly reward deserving individuals.

Grow with referral programs.

Your customers are your biggest asset in driving positive word-of-mouth marketing. A referral program helps you leverage existing customers to attract new ones.

Consider offering customers referral codes for their connections to use while scheduling. When both parties—the referrer and the customer they’re referring—are rewarded, you can boost customer retention and acquisition at the same time.

Improving Customer Service

Are you putting your best foot forward? Even if you are, you should always be striving to do better.

Putting customers first with a few best practices can improve relationships and service quality.

Actively listen to customer feedback.

Soliciting and responding to customer feedback reveals where your biggest improvement opportunities are straight from the horse’s mouth.

Feature-rich HVAC business software makes this process a snap by automating emails, surveys, and review requests. Customers can share their experiences to help your company, team, or both keep improving.

Streamline communication.

Maintain efficient service delivery, starting with communication. Customer service lines, email, and chatbots ensure customers can get what they need.

Plus, you can use HVAC business software to generate service reminders, on-the-way alerts, and post-job follow-ups to ensure customer satisfaction.

Strengthen Your Business and Customer Relationships with Service Fusion

Want customers to return again and again to stimulate your HVAC business’s cash flow? Simple scheduling, communication outside of service needs, and a few perks here and there can turn customer relationships from so-so to solid.

A winning combination of good old-fashioned elbow grease and HVAC business software can help solidify your position as a go-to service resource.

Baby, have you checked the thermostat? Because you’re smokin’.

At the height of summer, your customers are just trying to beat the heat, and your HVAC business is their go-to. But your team members must also keep their cool throughout the job lifecycle.

HVAC business software keeps contractors as cool as a cucumber, improving day-to-day operations and overall company success.

Here are 4 specific ways that using the right field service management software to run your HVAC business can take the heat off you and your team.

1. Take the heat off paperwork.

Think about all the ways we’ve reduced manual efforts in life. Robot vacuums, grocery ordering and delivery, voice assistants—the list is endless. So, why shouldn’t HVAC professionals be able to get in on it, too?

HVAC business software transforms your processes to reduce what drags you down the most—excessive paperwork. Here’s how:

Mobile Flexibility

With a mobile app, information moves seamlessly. Tap an app to share and access job details from anywhere, even if you’re in the office and your technicians are on the road.

The right software tools help you ditch spreadsheets and filing cabinets by taking everything digital. Here are a few examples of how they can help:

Text job details, to-do lists, and driving directions.

Upload job notes and photos.

Capture pre-work and post-work signatures.

Simplified Estimates

HVAC business software transforms the estimate process, saving you time and headaches. Instead of hours searching through service catalogs, you can spend minutes or even seconds on each estimate.

The best estimating tools can help your business and customers

Add prepopulated service line items.

Share good/better/best options.

Use eSign to approve jobs.

Convert estimates into jobs in a few clicks.

Integration with QuickBooks

Bring your accounting and HVAC business software together, so you can stop retyping information and invoices and eliminate errors from manual data entry.

Service Fusion’s HVAC business software, for example, integrates directly with QuickBooks to pull accounting information into one place. As a result, any changes—customer information, products, services, and so on—made in either platform automatically sync, so you don’t have to juggle software.

And if your software supports payments, too, all the better.

Integrated payment tools allow you to forgo paperwork for invoices and payments that may otherwise require a lot of back-and-forth with customers. Automate and send invoices to get paid faster and even enable progressive invoicing to support incremental payments.

RELATED ARTICLE: How to Use Digital Payment Methods to Minimize Late Payments in Home Services

2. Streamline scheduling and dispatching.

Alright, you got their business. Now, who’s going to handle the job? HVAC software supports contractors in scheduling and dispatching jobs based on who has the time and the right skills.

Manage Jobs and Workloads

Calling techs to take on jobs or juggling spreadsheet schedules is inefficient at best. At worst, it can become downright chaos. Quick, real-time updates? Now we’re talking.

HVAC business software can automate scheduling and dispatching with a user-friendly interface so that you can avoid over- or under-booking technicians. Imagine being able to see all your techs and jobs in a calendar view and drag and drop to schedule as needed. Sounds pretty convenient, right?

Smart scheduling tools like these save you time and have even been shown to improve productivity by up to 20%.

GPS Fleet Tracking

GPS fleet tracking has transformed field service management. There’s no better way to simplify scheduling so you can find suitable techs on the fly.

This feature serves as your eyes and ears from afar. Having it baked into your HVAC software can ensure productivity and efficiency by helping you:

Monitor driver behavior.

Prevent unauthorized vehicle use.

Cut fuel costs.

Reduce insurance premiums.

Track your fleet in real time, improving assignments and costs.

3. Enhance customer communication.

“Can you hear me now?”

That question doesn’t even matter if you can’t connect in the first place. HVAC contractors can plug the gaps with strategies and tools to open the lines of communication.

Seamless Client Interaction

Waiting on hold for customer service or getting filtered as spam? Without the right tools, communication between techs and customers can be challenging.

These days, SMS messaging is one of the easiest and most popular solutions. In fact, 90% of people prefer texting with businesses rather than a phone call. Luckily, HVAC business software lets customers and technicians text across the whole job lifecycle.

Keep customers up to date on their services by texting communications like:

Appointment reminders

On-the-way alerts

Real-time service updates

Overcommunication for Better Safety

Anything your customers need to know as the team gets to work? Too much communication is better than none at all.

You can use your HVAC software to share key information. For example, to tell them if they need to turn off their HVAC system during their service or to share details about hazards to prevent accidents.

The HVAC market is competitive. There are few barriers to entry. This means smaller companies serving local areas are forced to compete.

While you know your work inside and out, you need to spread the word. You need the right message to reach the right people at the right time.

The solution to your problem? Learning how to market your HVAC business.

There are so many different ways to approach marketing. But if you really want to get in front of prospects and convert them into customers, you need a targeted approach.

Think of this guide as your strategic companion. We’ll first explore why marketing is essential. Then, we’ll explain how to do it.

We’ll discuss a few different tactics you can use to achieve your growth goals. To wrap up, we’ll give you four tips you can take action on right now.

You’re amazing at what you do. You’re skilled, passionate, and driven to delight your customers. Now, it’s time to put yourself out there. Let’s get into it.

RELATED ARTICLE: How to Get More Customers for Your HVAC Business

Why You Need to Market Your HVAC Business

Like most business owners, do you have growth goals? Are you ready to expand your customer base?

Ambition is incredible, but you’ll need to invest in marketing to realize your true business potential.

Why? Think about it like this. You might be the most talented HVAC professional in your area. But if people don’t know you exist, they can’t hire you.

You’re essentially invisible, but marketing can change this. It’s the bridge from where you are now to where you want to be.

Here are just some of the benefits:

Marketing Raises Awareness

It’s simple math. The more people know about your business, the more calls you get. This turns into more jobs and more revenue.

Of course, great marketing is a little more nuanced than pasting your business name and number everywhere. You don’t want to overwhelm or bombard your prospects.

Instead, it’s about showing potential customers you’re skilled and trustworthy. HVAC is a big investment for homeowners and businesses. They want to be 100% sure you’re the right person for the job.

Marketing Helps You Stand Out

Other businesses in your area likely offer the same or similar services. So, ask yourself now: Why would someone choose me?

Your answers are your unique selling propositions (USPs). These differentiate you. For example, maybe you offer 24/7 emergency services. Or perhaps you specialize in eco-friendly HVAC solutions.

Marketing captures and communicates your USPs, making you more competitive.

Marketing Creates Urgency

Marketing is a part of business. It may not be your favorite thing, but it’s a continuous practice that drives revenue year-round.

But sometimes, you ramp up your marketing to promote a special offer. Promotions encourage prospects who are on the fence to act—and fast. They don’t want to miss out on a deal.

FROM ONE OF OUR PARTNERS: How to Scale Your HVAC Business

How to Market Your HVAC Business

Learning how to market your HVAC business is a solid investment that’ll repay you with new customers. But where should you start?

We compiled this list to help you narrow down your options. Consider these six strategies to maximize every marketing dollar.

Strategy 1: Local SEO

Maybe you’ve heard of search engine optimization (SEO). It’s the science (and art) of tweaking your online presence to appear higher in search engine results.

Local SEO is a bit different. It’s geared toward helping you rank near the top for location-specific keywords. For example, you might target the search term “HVAC repairs San Diego.”

Where does this fit in the customer journey?

So many of us rely on Google to find solutions. So, you can bet your ideal customers are searching online for HVAC services.

If your business appears at the top of the search results, people are more likely to click on your website.

If your website is clear, builds credibility, and makes getting in touch easy, you’re golden. You’ve converted a Google searcher into a paying customer.

What are local SEO best practices?

SEO can be technical. But that doesn’t mean it’s out of reach. Follow these best practices:

Claim your Google Business listing. Check whether the information listed is correct.

Add local keywords to your website. Include location-specific phrases on different web pages.

List your business in local directories. Being on sites like Yelp can lift your local search rankings.

What are the potential challenges?

For one, high competition in your area can make ranking on the first page of search results tough.

Try focusing on niche keywords. Try something like “emergency HVAC repairs in Chicago,” for example.

Another challenge is keeping up with ever-changing ranking factors. Consider using SEO tools like Ahrefs. That way, you can track your performance over time and optimize your efforts.

Strategy 2: Social Media

Love it or hate it, social media is here to stay. It’s a powerful marketing tool that connects you directly to your target audience.

Use social media marketing to build a community and engage with your customers.

Where does this fit in the customer journey?

Let’s say a homeowner sees a post from your HVAC business on Facebook. They like it so much that they follow your page.

Over the next few months, they see more of your posts. You’re showcasing your expertise. You’re sharing customer testimonials.

Then, you run a promotion. The timing’s just right—the homeowner needs your services. They already trust you, so they send you a direct message right there on Facebook.

You give them a quote, and the rest is history.

What are social media marketing best practices?

Keep these best practices in mind:

Be consistent. Your business can look dodgy to a prospect if your last social post is four years old.

Always add value to your audience. Share tips, promotions, customer testimonials, and behind-the-scenes looks at your business.

Reply quickly to any comments or messages. This shows you genuinely care about your clients.

What are the potential challenges?

Creating engaging content week in and week out can be challenging. Use a social media calendar to plan ahead. If you have a blog, you can also repurpose content.

Why not ask ChatGPT for some ideas?

Another potential roadblock is not getting enough reach. If you don’t have a big following, getting in front of new customers can be hard.

You might benefit from publishing a mix of organic and paid posts.

RELATED ARTICLE: What You Need to Know Before Buying Another HVAC Business

Strategy 3: Email Marketing

Email marketing is one of the most effective approaches for businesses. That’s why more than one in three brands are increasing their email budget.

It works like this: You collect email addresses through your website. Then, you send targeted emails. These inform your mailing list and promote your services.

Where does this fit in the customer journey?

Let’s say a homeowner signs up for your newsletter. They start receiving monthly emails with tips on maintaining their HVAC system.

They will recall your helpful emails the next time they need HVAC services. You’ve already proven your expertise, so choosing you is a no-brainer.

What are email marketing best practices?

The more targeted your approach, the better. Try these best practices:

Segment your audience. Use characteristics like past services, location, or customer type (e.g., residential vs. commercial). Then, create highly relevant, personalized content that appeals to their pain points.

Make sure your emails add value. Offer tips and guides. Include expert insights. Otherwise, your newsletters and promotions could be in the trash—unopened and unread.

Add CTAs to every email. These should be relevant to the email’s content. For example, say you’ve sent a reminder for an HVAC check-up. The CTA might be something like, “Schedule your check-up now!”

What are the potential challenges?

The biggest problem with email marketing? Low open rates.

This is where your subject line comes in—47% of people decide to open an email depending on the subject line. So, make sure it’s engaging and click-worthy. Consider adding the recipient’s name.

Strategy 4: Referral Programs

Don’t have a huge marketing budget? Put setting up a referral program on your to-do list.

A referral program encourages existing customers to recommend your services. When someone acts on their recommendation, the existing customer gets a reward, like a future discount.

It’s a word-of-mouth strategy that turns happy customers into your best marketing tool.

Where does this fit in the customer journey?

The process unfolds like this:

You’ve just blown it out of the water. Your customer is thrilled. They are so happy that they rave about you to their neighbor.

The neighbor then contacts you and mentions the referral. You then reward your customer with a 10% discount on their next bill.

This delivers a two-fold win: getting new customers and inspiring repeat business.

What are referral program best practices?

Referral programs are a balancing act. Here’s how to make it work for you:

Make sure the incentive is enough to motivate customers. At the same time, it shouldn’t affect your profit margin too much.

The process should be straightforward. A simple online form or referral cards are excellent options.

Promote the program on your website so your customers know about the opportunity. You could even mention it in person.

What are the potential challenges?

For referral programs to work, your customers must be active participants.

Remind them about the program. You could even try limited-time bonuses to spark their interest.

Another issue is tracking. It can be hard to keep track of who referred whom. A customer relationship management (CRM) system can help.

Strategy 5: Content Marketing

Content attracts organic (i.e., unpaid) traffic to your website. It helps you rank for the search terms your target audience is looking up.

In addition, sharing valuable content like blog articles and how-to videos demonstrates your expertise. It’s evidence you know your stuff. This helps build trust.

Where does this fit in the customer journey?

There’s a homeowner in your area. They are concerned about the air quality in their home.

They turn to Google. They search “how to improve indoor air quality.” Your article on the topic shows up first.

They’re impressed by your depth of knowledge. They explore your website and see your five-star reviews.

So, they contact you to schedule an air quality assessment.

What are content marketing best practices?

Focus on topics that resonate with your audience’s needs and interests.

Use keywords, meta descriptions, and quality backlinks. This increases the likelihood of your content ranking well in search engines.

Regularly publish new content to keep your audience engaged and improve your website’s authority.

What are the potential challenges?

Staring at a blank page? It’s a common challenge.

Try tools like AnswerThePublic or Google Trends. These can give you insight into what people are searching for related to HVAC topics.

Strategy 6: Paid Ads

Organic traffic is great. But it can take time to build. If you want quick results, consider paid ads.

You can buy ads on platforms like Google and Meta (Facebook and Instagram). These ads might appear at the top of search results. They might also show up on social media or other websites.

Where does this fit in the customer journey?

Imagine you’ve just launched an HVAC business. Your site isn’t currently ranking highly in search results.

So, you run a paid ad. A homeowner searches on Google for “HVAC repair near me.” Your paid ad appears at the top of the search results.

They click through to your website and contact you for a quote.

What are paid advertising best practices?

Make the most of the detailed targeting filters. Your ad should reach people who are ready and able to book your services.

Craft scroll-stopping ads. They should be visually appealing, too. Always include a clear CTA.

Track the performance of your ads. Make adjustments to improve your results.

What are the potential challenges?

Ads can be costly. To overcome this, start with a small budget. You can increase your spending as you get used to the process and tools.

Continuously optimizing your ads will help you achieve the best return on investment (ROI). A/B testing can also reveal which ads perform better and why.

Let’s get started.

RELATED ARTICLE: What Is Payment Processing?

Understanding Field Service Credit Card Processing

We’ll start with the basics: what is credit card processing?

Let’s look at what happens when a customer swipes their card or taps “Pay.” Every credit card transaction involves six key players:

Cardholder—the customer making a payment

Issuing bank—the bank servicing and funding the customer’s credit card

Merchant—the business receiving the credit card payment

Merchant bank (receiving bank)—the bank account in which the credit card payment is deposited

Card networks—financial services, such as Mastercard, Visa, and American Express, that allow transactions between different banks

Payment processor—the card processing system that manages the flow of transactions

The payment processor authorizes and secures transfers from the cardholder through a card network to the merchant. They also provide the hardware and software tools required for credit card payments.

Usually, the merchant pays for the service. Most credit card processors charge a small fee for every transaction. Others charge a flat monthly subscription fee.

But why trouble yourself with credit card processing? You can still get paid in other ways, such as cash, checks, and bank transfers.

Card payments have unique perks. Here are five reasons why your field service business needs credit card processing:

No Missed Sale Opportunities

As of 2023, 82% of US adults had a credit card. And each consumer had an average of 3.9 credit cards. Credit cards are not only prevalent but also the most preferred mode of payment. In 2023, credit cards covered 32% of payments.

So, accepting credit cards allows many of your customers to make payments. You might even lose some customers for not accepting credit cards. And since credit cards are detached from cash, customers are more comfortable making larger payments.

Fast Payments

Credit card processing takes mere seconds. With technologies such as Tap and NFC (Near Field Communication), payment is almost instantaneous.

You don’t have to wait for bank confirmations or checks to clear. That means no delays in payments.

Payments On the Go

With credit cards, you can get paid anywhere. You can receive payments when out in the field, in your office, or on the go.

That convenience works both ways too. The customer has several choices when it comes to payments. For instance, they may use their smartphone, computer, or mobile card reader. They can even pay with a virtual credit card.

Easy Bookkeeping

Credit card payments greatly simplify bookkeeping. Once integrated with your accounting system, the credit card processor automatically logs payments in a ledger. So you don’t have to record each payment manually.

Also, these are paperless transactions. There are no physical receipts or invoices to file.

Legitimize Your Business

Accepting credit cards improves your business’s credibility. Credit cards are generally accepted as a secure way to make legitimate payments. In other words, customers trust credit cards.

By extension, offering credit card payments is a strong indication of trustworthiness. It also shows that your field service business is professional and credible.

Choosing the Right Credit Card Processing System

There are many credit card processors available to merchants. While they all serve the same purpose, each solution has unique pros, cons, and ideal use cases.

How do you choose the right credit card processor for your field service business?

The trick is to weigh all your options. To help you out, here’s a list of things to consider when choosing a credit card processing system:

Type of Processor

There are several different types of credit card processors. The main ones include:

Web-based credit card processors

Payment apps

Mobile card readers

Point-of-sale (POS) payment systems

Look for a credit card processor suitable to the field service industry. Your best option is likely something you can use on the go, like a mobile card reader or payment app.

Supported Payment Methods

Which payment methods or card networks does the system support? Choose a credit card processor that accommodates a wide range of payment options, not just credit cards.

Pick a processor that supports debit cards and digital wallets as well. Digital payment methods such as PayPal, Apple Pay, and Google Pay are quite popular among consumers.

Integration

Check how well the credit card processor fits with your existing infrastructure. Is it compatible with your field service software and business operations?

Most credit card processors provide dedicated software, APIs, plugins, or hardware to facilitate smooth integration.

Pricing and Fees

Cost is a significant factor when choosing a credit card processing system. Normally, credit card processors charge three main types of fees:

Payment processing fees—pay for the processing service

Interchange fees—go to the issuing bank

Assessment fees—go to the card network

The total charge per transaction rarely exceeds 4%. However, the pricing structure can greatly impact the final cost. Credit card processing companies typically structure their prices in one of four ways:

Flat-rate pricing: You pay a flat rate for every transaction.

Interchange-plus pricing: Each of the three fees is calculated and charged on the fly.

Tiered pricing: You pay a percentage of the transaction total plus a flat fee based on the card type.

Membership-based pricing: You pay a flat monthly or annual membership fee.

Contract Structure

Many credit card processors offer long-term (4+ years) contracts with hefty cancellation fees. They lock you in, making it difficult and expensive to switch to another provider. Look for a service provider that offers annual or even monthly contracts.

Security and Compliance

Ensure the credit card processing service is secure and compliant. Payment information is regarded as “highly sensitive” and must be protected. The PCI DSS (Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard) sets rules and guidelines for securing credit card information.

Check that the processor is PCI DSS compliant.

Customer Support

Choose a credit card processor with 24/7 customer support and dedicated account managers. That way, they can promptly resolve any payment issues that arise. Ongoing, responsive support helps keep payment interruptions to a minimum.

Setting Up Your Field Service Credit Card Processing System

A field service card processing system makes it easy to request, receive, and track payments. The system works behind the scenes; there’s really nothing for you to do. However, it must be set up properly to work smoothly.

Here are the 5 easy steps you can take to set up a field service credit card processor:

Step 1: Open a Merchant Account

The first thing you’ll need is a merchant account. This is a bank account made specifically for receiving credit and debit card payments. It holds and secures funds from the issuing bank before they are deposited to the actual receiving bank account.

Note: a merchant account is not the same as a business account.

Nowadays, most credit card processors will open a merchant account for you. The account comes as a convenient part of the service package. All you have to do is fill in your business details.

Step 2: Sign Up for the Credit Card Processing Service

Fill out an application with your chosen credit card processing firm. They’ll likely ask to see your field service license, EIN, and any other supporting documentation. The service provider just wants to ascertain that you are a legitimate business.

After registering, you’ll get a merchant account and an online merchant portal. From there, you can select your preferred service and pricing package. But all that depends on the credit card processing firm.

Step 3: Get the Necessary Hardware and Software

The credit card processor may require you to download and install some software, smartphone apps, or web plugins.

Another handy tool for field service providers is a mobile card reader. It’s usually more reliable than smartphones and web apps when out in the field. You can get a mobile card reader from any electronics dealer or your credit card processor.

Step 4: Integrate the Credit Card Processor

By this point, you should have all you need to start receiving payments. What remains is to put everything together.

For starters, link the merchant account to your bank account. Then, bring the apps and mobile card readers online. And crucially, synchronize the system with your accounting and field service management solutions.

Step 5: Train Your Field Service Workers

Finally, train your employees on how to use the new system. The last thing you want is payment delays or errors because someone pressed the wrong button.

Fortunately, most credit card processing services are pretty straightforward. It shouldn’t take long for everyone to master charging credit cards.

Best Practices for Secure Transactions

First and foremost, work together with your processor to meet PCI DSS compliance. This is particularly important if you have a payment page on your field service website.

Compliance with PCI DSS means meeting 12 basic requirements grouped into six categories. But generally, it all comes down to protecting cardholders’ information.

Non-compliance can lead to heavy fines, a ban from receiving credit card payments, and legal action.

Here are other ways you can protect your customers’ sensitive data:

Enable multi-factor authentication for customers making payments.

Implement fraud detection and prevention tools.

Minimize cases of chargeback.

Ensure your field service website is secure.

Conduct regular security training, tests, and audits.

Cut out any unnecessary fields in the payment form.

Never allow customers to send credit card information via email or text.

If you want to become an HVAC technician or contractor, you’ll need an HVAC license. But where should you start? And what are the required steps to get your license?

In this article, we’ll walk step-by-step through the licensing process for HVAC technicians. We’ll cover how to identify licenses for different HVAC career paths. Then, discuss the education and experience requirements for an HVAC license.

We’ll wrap up with a license application checklist and practical tips to begin pursuing your HVAC license.

Let’s get started.

The Difference Between HVAC License and HVAC Certification

You may not be sure if an HVAC license is the same as an HVAC certification. Many contractors understandably confuse licensing and certification. So, let’s clarify this first.

HVAC certification is professional accreditation for HVAC technicians. It confirms that you’re qualified to work on HVAC systems.

HVAC certifications are typically granted after completing a course and (or) passing an exam. While the state issues HVAC licenses, certifications are awarded by a host of organizations, such as:

ESCO Group

North American Technical Excellence (NATE)

Refrigerating Engineers and Technicians Association (RETA)

Refrigeration Service Engineers Society (RSES)

Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)

However, HVAC certification and licensing often go hand in hand. In many states, you must possess certain certifications to get an HVAC license.

RELATED ARTICLE: How to Get HVAC Certified

Why It’s Important To Have Your HVAC License

Having an HVAC license can open new doors for you or your contracting business. An HVAC license is more than just a piece of paper.

Getting licensed is a means to:

Meet legal, insurance, and bonding requirements

Unlock your eligibility for various HVAC jobs

Showcase your competence in HVAC services

Expand your HVAC contracting opportunities

Increase your HVAC earning potential

That’s about it for the “what” and the “why.” Now, let’s talk about how to get an HVAC license.

Research HVAC Career Paths

HVAC is a broad industry. The field offers a wide range of specialized career paths. There are several options, whether you’re looking for employment opportunities or starting your own HVAC contracting business.

Here are the nine main HVAC specializations and career paths available for contractors:

HVAC Installation

HVAC installation technicians set up and commission new HVAC systems. Installations can be done in residential homes or commercial buildings.

However, technicians may need separate licenses for residential and commercial HVAC installations. This is the case in states such as Oregon and Alaska.

HVAC installers work closely with architects, homeowners, building managers, and other contractors. This is because HVAC installation touches on every aspect of a building’s design. Everything, from the structure and plumbing layout to electrical wiring, must come together to accommodate an HVAC system.

FROM ONE OF OUR PARTNERS: Commercial HVAC Services vs Residential HVAC Services

HVAC Repair and Maintenance

HVAC repair and maintenance involves servicing HVAC systems. Repair technicians also troubleshoot and fix malfunctioning HVAC units.

HVAC installers and repairers carry the same license. But again, depending on your state, you may need different commercial and residential work licenses.

Solar HVAC

Solar-powered HVAC systems are growing in popularity—and for good reasons. Running a medium-sized residential air conditioner on the grid can cost as much as $108 monthly. Using solar power drastically cuts HVAC energy costs.

And as a bonus, solar energy is clean and renewable.

This growing interest in solar energy creates career opportunities in solar HVAC. However, you’ll need various certifications and licenses to become a solar HVAC technician. For instance, working with roof-mounted solar PVs may require roofing and electrical contracting licenses.

Energy Auditing

Energy auditors assess HVAC systems’ performance and check whether equipment needs to be repaired, upgraded, or replaced. They aim to ensure that every HVAC system is as efficient as possible.

Energy auditing is more of a certifiable skill set than a licensed trade. So, all you’ll need is an energy auditor certification from a reputable institution and a state-issued contractor’s license to operate as an energy auditor.

HVAC Design Engineering

HVAC engineers design and implement HVAC systems in homes, commercial establishments, and industrial buildings. They work closely with contractors and architects to design efficient systems that match specific needs.

Ideally, you’ll need a bachelor’s degree in mechanical or HVAC design engineering to pursue this path. An engineering certification is enough to get you started. However, you may need a license to work on certain projects, particularly in the public sector.

Indoor Air Quality Inspection

An indoor air quality inspector assesses air quality in homes and other buildings. They check for hazardous air pollutants such as mold, particulate matter, and carbon monoxide (CO). After the assessment, they make recommendations to improve indoor air quality.

Most states won’t require you to have a license to perform air quality tests. However, you must be formally trained and certified to do the job.

Refrigeration Mechanics

Refrigeration technicians, or refrigeration mechanics, work with refrigerated systems. These include your typical fridges, beverage machines, and walk-in coolers.

Most states require technicians working with such systems to have a refrigeration license. Before that, refrigeration mechanics must complete formal training, pass an exam, and acquire EPA certification.

HVAC Sales

Working in HVAC sales doesn’t require any licensure. But you do need people skills and a deep understanding of HVAC equipment.

You can work as a sales representative for an HVAC company or run your own intermediary HVAC business. With the latter, you’ll get paid to connect HVAC manufacturers/contractors with HVAC customers.

Entrepreneurship

How about starting your own HVAC contracting business?

You don’t even have to be an HVAC technician yourself. You could hire qualified and licensed HVAC experts to work on your behalf. However, many states require at least one equity partner in the business to be licensed. If you plan to be a sole owner, you will need a license in those states.

Regardless, you’ll definitely need a good understanding of the industry. More importantly, you’ll need strong entrepreneurial skills to hack it in the competitive and dynamic HVAC business landscape.

You’ve seen the options; what do you want to do?

Choosing a career path, especially in an unfamiliar industry, can be daunting. To help you out, here are some important factors to consider in finding the right path for you:

Passion and interests: What interests you most in the HVAC industry? Are you passionate about working in HVAC in the first place? Remember that famous quote: “Find a job you enjoy doing, and you will never have to work a day in your life.”

Your career goals: Determine what’s motivating your career change. It could be a better salary, work-life balance, professional fulfillment, etc. More importantly, how far do you want to take it?

Difficulty: How difficult is it to pursue a given career path? As we’ve seen, some HVAC specialties are more challenging than others.

Skills and abilities: What are you best at? You might be a natural problem-solver, strategist, leader, negotiator, etc. Choose a career path that aligns with your professional qualities, skills, and talents.

Educational Requirements for Licensed HVAC Technicians

The first step to becoming an HVAC technician is enrolling in HVAC training. There are two main ways you can train as an HVAC technician:

Learn On the Job

Learning on the job could mean one of two things: apprenticeship or on-the-job training. The two may sound similar, but they’re pretty different.

With an apprenticeship, you typically work under one or more experienced technicians. You essentially shadow your mentor, participating in and learning from what they do. Eventually, you’ll have picked up enough skills and knowledge to work solo.

HVAC apprenticeship programs can take anywhere between one and five years. The duration will depend mainly on your learning speed.

Most apprenticeship programs are sponsored by the employer. In this case, the employer might be an HVAC contractor, distributor, or manufacturer.

On-the-job training is a bit more formal and takes less time (one to two years). You learn by working under the guidance of more knowledgeable or experienced colleagues. Coursework is also offered alongside hands-on learning.

The main difference between on-the-job training and apprenticeship is the learning scope. With apprenticeship, you only learn the skills necessary for a particular job. On the other hand, on-the-job training aims at full HVAC proficiency.

RELATED ARTICLE: Mastering the Trade: HVAC Apprenticeships

Enroll in an Accredited HVAC Training Program

Option two is to join a formal HVAC training program. Enroll in any vocational training institute offering HVAC courses. Just make sure the institution or course is accredited. Accreditation comes from organizations such as the ANSI National Accreditation Board and NATE.

Most vocational training schools only require a high school degree or GED.

An HVAC training course typically takes one or two years. You then sit an exam at the end of the course. Passing that exam earns you an HVAC certification. The exact certification will depend on what you studied and tested for.

There are also training programs like ForgeNow, an accredited program that’s eligible for the GI Bill. Their seven-week program gives you the opportunity to earn up to four HVAC certifications.

Consider Specialized HVAC Training

Conventional HVAC training programs only cover the basic skill sets. Regular training might not be enough if you want to specialize in a particular area. Besides, why not enrich your HVAC expertise by learning specialized skills and knowledge?

Specialized courses and certifications are available for a wide variety of topics, including:

CFC-refrigerated systems

Indoor air quality testing

Solar HVAC

HVAC design and engineering

Hydronic heating

Smart HVAC controls

Energy auditing

Industrial refrigeration

Commercial heating and cooling

Necessary HVAC Experience Before Licensing

HVAC licensure requirements vary widely from state to state. For instance, entry-level HVAC technicians do not need licenses in some states. In others, newbies cannot get their licenses until they’ve worked in an HVAC field for a given period.

Let’s go over some examples of field experience requirements in various states:

California: To take the HVAC contractor exam, you must demonstrate at least four years of work experience under a licensed contractor.

Georgia: Eligibility for a Class I License includes four years of experience. Class II requires five years of experience working with AC systems exceeding 175,000 BTU of heating and 60,000 BTU of cooling.

Idaho: You need 8,000 hours under your belt to qualify for the Unrestricted HVAC License.

Alabama: HVAC apprentices can get their license after two years and 3,000 hours of work experience under a licensed contractor.

Requirements to Apply for an HVAC License

Again, HVAC licensing requirements vary depending on the state. Some states are more lenient than others. But generally, you must meet the following criteria to apply for an HVAC license:

At least 18 years of age

Clean criminal record with no felonies

High school diploma, GED, or bachelor’s degree

Proof of completing vocational or on-the-job HVAC training

Certification for passing HVAC general skills exams

Proof of work experience under a recognized and licensed contractor

Payment of licensure fees

HVAC business insurance (a requirement for independent contractors in some states)

EPA Technician Certification (for technicians handling refrigerated systems)

Check your state’s HVAC licensing requirements here.

Obtaining Your HVAC License

Anyone wanting to become a licensed HVAC technician must pass a licensing exam. The exam tests your competence in HVAC skills and knowledge.

Every state that licenses HVAC technicians has its own licensing exam. The exam type and requirements are determined by the particular state.

Let’s take California for example. California’s Contractors State License Board (CSLB) issues a Class C Specialty Contractor License—specifically, the C-20 – Warm-Air Heating, Ventilating, and Air-Conditioning Contractor license for HVAC technicians.

To sit the exam, you must meet the following requirements:

18 years of age with a valid US-issued ID or driver’s license

Valid SSN or TIN

Clean criminal record

At least four years of HVAC work experience

The CSLB administers and scores the C-20 exam. To get your license, you must pass two exams. That’s the C-20 exam and the Law and Business exam. The exams will cost you between $799 and $949 in fees.

Besides state-issued tests, there are several other HVAC exams. Here are the HVAC certification and specialty exams you’ll want to take:

EPA 608 Test

Most states require HVAC technicians to have EPA 608 Certification. The certification clears you to work on refrigerated systems containing chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs). EPA 608 Certification has four levels:

Type I: Servicing small appliances

Type II: Servicing high-pressure appliances

Type III: Servicing low-pressure appliances

Universal: Servicing all types of CFC-refrigerated appliances

You must pass the EPA Section 608 Technician Tests to obtain EPA certification. These tests are administered by EPA-approved organizations such as Mainstream Engineering. You can even take the test online.

NATE Professional Certification Exams

NATE offers various HVAC technician exams and certifications. They certify every HVAC skill level, from entry level all the way to senior level. Each exam has unique requirements. But it’s pretty easy to get started at the primary level.

You can study for any test with NATE Training Academy or any NATE-approved school. The same goes when it comes to sitting exams.

HVAC Excellence Exams

HVAC Excellence Certification is a series of stackable progressing levels of technician certification. The exams and certifications are divided into four levels:

Student Outcome Assessments

Employment-Ready Certifications

Professional Technician

Master Specialist Certifications

Within these levels are several areas of specialization.

HVAC Excellence is a member of the ESCO Group. The ESCO Group is responsible for administering and scoring HVAC Excellence exams. They work with third-party educators to train candidates and proctor exams.

RETA Exams

The Refrigerating Engineers and Technicians Association certifies HVAC technicians in industrial refrigeration.

RETA offers five certification levels:

CARO – Certified Assistant Refrigeration Operator

CIRO – Certified Industrial Refrigeration Operator

CRST – Certified Refrigeration Service Technician

CRES – Certified Refrigeration Energy Specialist

RAI – RETA Authorized Instructor

Earning any of these credentials means passing an exam. Fortunately, RETA has a vast library of training materials, including practice exams. They also provide online training for exam candidates. You can also study and sit exams with the various RETA-accredited institutions.

HVAC License: Where to Start

Research HVAC career paths and choose one that matches your interests, skills, and personality.

We’ll explain the importance of conducting thorough market research. We’ll share the educational, licensing, and certification requirements.

We’ll also explore the pros and cons of being self-employed and working for a business. Lastly, we’ll share some actions you can take today to get started.

Your future looks bright. Here’s how to get an electrician license.

Research the Electrical Industry

Researching the electrical industry is the first step to becoming a successful electrician.

Why? Because knowing the industry inside and out helps you understand different career paths. It allows you to see various opportunities and decide what suits you best.

You will also learn which certifications and training programs are essential for your chosen path.

You can identify trends, too. For example, the demand for energy-efficient electrical systems has increased. This means electricians who specialize in these systems are in high demand.

This is just one type of specialty. There are plenty more to choose from, including:

Residential: These electricians work in homes. They install wiring, lighting, and electrical systems. They’re often involved in new home construction or renovation projects.

Commercial: These electricians operate in business settings like offices and stores. They tend to handle more complex systems compared to residential electricians.

Industrial: These electricians work in factories and plants. They deal with heavy machinery and equipment. This specialty may require knowledge of robotics and industrial systems.

Maintenance: These electricians make sure electrical systems and equipment are working well. They do this with regular inspections and repairs. They can work in many different settings, including residential, commercial, and industrial.

Construction: These electricians operate on construction sites. They install and test new electrical systems in buildings.

FROM ONE OF OUR PARTNERS: Commercial Electrical Work vs. Residential Electrical Work

Researching the industry also helps you gauge market demand and potential job growth.

In general, the electrical industry has seen steady growth. Even with rising costs for labor and materials, the demand for electricians is strong.

Revenue for electricians has grown at a rate of 0.9% per year over the past five years. It’s expected to reach $255.4 billion in 2024.

The number of electrician businesses in the U.S. grew by 2.1% from 2022 to 2023, totaling 238,660 businesses. This growth means there are more opportunities for electricians now than before.

Educational Requirements to Become an Electrician

Like most professions, you’ll need some education to become an electrician. Here’s what’s required:

Get a High School Diploma

First, you need a high school diploma or a GED. This is essential.

It might be worth taking math subjects in high school. These skills will help you later down the line. For example, you’ll find it easier to measure wiring lengths or calculate electrical currents.

Physics and English are also helpful.

If you didn’t complete high school, don’t despair. You can earn your diploma online.

Undertake Training at a Trade School

This step isn’t mandatory, but it can give you an edge.

Programs at trade schools and vocational colleges familiarize you with the basics of electrical work. You’re already one step ahead before you start your apprenticeship.

You’ll also learn the National Electrical Code (NEC) and workplace safety standards.

Alongside theoretical work, you might also get hands-on training.

Find an Apprenticeship

To get an electrician license, you must complete an apprenticeship.

First, research opportunities in your local area. Some places to look include:

Apprenticeship.gov

The Electrical Training Alliance

The IEC Apprenticeship Program

Before your apprenticeship begins, you should take and pass an exam. This checks that you have the required reading, comprehension, and basic math skills.

You might also need to register as a trainee or apprentice before working on a job site. This requirement differs by state.

FROM ONE OF OUR PARTNERS: 4 Top Electrician Recruitment Agencies for 2022

Finish Your Apprenticeship

Your apprenticeship is the most important and impactful step in your licensing journey.

It’s where you learn the trade and sharpen your skills. It’s where you get the opportunity to work alongside a master or journeyperson electrician. They will give you personalized feedback and support.

You’ll start with basic tasks. As you become more knowledgeable and confident, you’ll be given more responsibility.

In most cases, your apprenticeship will last five years. You’ll get paid by the hour.

By the end, you’ll have the know-how needed to safely complete a range of electrical jobs.

Get Your License or Certification

The finish line is in sight! It’s time to get your license—if your state, like most, requires it.

Some states don’t have electrician licensing at all. Others only require it if you plan to start your own business.

This is where you’ll need to do some research. Look up your state licensing authority or contact them. You might also need to check with local municipalities.

To get licensed, you might need to pass an exam. This will test your knowledge of both the theoretical and practical components you learned during your apprenticeship.

Licensing and Certificates for Electricians

As discussed above, some states require licensing, while others don’t.

If your state does, getting licensed is a must. You might not be able to practice legally without one.

There are a few different licenses and certifications you might need. Here are the main ones:

Apprentice license: To start your career, you need to become an apprentice. You perform basic repairs and adjustments while gaining experience. Most states ask you to register as an apprentice.

Journeyperson license: After completing your apprenticeship, you can become a journeyperson. You’ll need to pass an exam that tests your knowledge of the NEC and other parts of the job. You must also have a certain number of hours of training under your belt.

Master electrician license: The next step is to become a master electrician, which also involves passing an exam. The master electrician exam is more advanced than the journeyperson exam. It tests your ability to design electrical systems and supervise other electricians. You also need to have several years of experience as a journeyperson.

Contractor license: If you want to start your own electrical business, you need a contractor license. This license allows you to hire other electricians and take on larger projects. Requirements for a contractor license vary by state. They often include passing a business and law exam and proving you have experience and insurance.

Other Certifications to Consider

Specializing in a niche part of the industry can be a smart move. You become a go-to expert. This can sharpen your competitive edge and attract more business.

For some specialties, you’ll need to earn a certification. Here are a couple of options to consider:

Certified Electrical Safety Compliance Professional (CESCP): This title allows you to oversee electrical safety programs and shows that you have a solid understanding of NFPA 70E, the standard for electrical safety in the workplace. The great thing about becoming a CESCP is that it’s an internationally recognized title. It could open the doors to some really exciting and unique career options.

Self-Employed vs. Working for a Business

Before you launch your career as an electrician, it’s a good idea to think about how you’d like to work. You might be employed by a business or work for yourself.

Each has pros and cons, and neither is better than the other. Making a decision depends on your personal and professional goals and aspirations.

Here are some advantages and drawbacks to think about:

Working for a Business

First in our comparison is working for a business. This is a more conventional route.

You are employed by an established company. They pay your wages, give you jobs, and set your hours.

Here are the pros:

A reliable income: Knowing exactly how much you will be paid and when can be a massive weight off your shoulders. Plus, when you work for a business, you often get benefits. This includes things like health insurance and retirement plans.

Job security: Working for an established business can offer more job security. Compared to being self-employed, you are less likely to face financial risks.

Less responsibility: You don’t have to worry about running a business. This means you don’t need to handle finances, marketing, or hiring. You can focus on providing exceptional service with zero distractions.

Training opportunities: Businesses often provide ongoing training. This helps you stay up to date with new technologies and codes.

And here are some cons:

Less flexibility: You’ll probably have fixed hours and a set schedule. You might not have a say on the types of projects you work on either.

More limited career advancement: Whether or not you get promoted or given a raise depends on the company’s policies.

Work environment: You might have to deal with workplace politics outside of your control.

You may need to meet a certain number of working hours or hold a master electrician license before you can go into business for yourself.

If you are determined to work for yourself, it’s important to weigh the pros and cons.

Here are the pros:

Control over your business: You are your own boss. You make all the decisions. You choose who you work with and the kinds of projects you work on.

Flexible scheduling: You decide when you work. This can help you strike a healthy work-life balance. You can also take time off without asking for permission.

Potentially higher earnings: Your income is based on your effort and business growth. This means there are no limits on how much you can earn.

Greater variety of work: You can take on more diverse projects depending on your interests and skills.

There are some cons too:

Financial risks: You don’t have a guaranteed paycheck. This means your income might be inconsistent. In addition to this, you’ll need to pay your own benefits and insurance.

This could mean more stress and longer working hours. It can be tricky to switch off at the end of the day.

Need for business skills: Running an electrical business is about much more than the actual electrical work. You’ll need other skills, too. This might include accounting and marketing.

Are you thinking of becoming an appliance technician? You’re on the right track. Appliance repair is a great career path.

If you have a knack for fixing problems and tinkering with electronics, appliance repair might just be the job for you. It’s a fulfilling and noble trade for those who enjoy hands-on problem-solving.

Moreover, appliance repair is a relatively secure profession. Appliance technician jobs are in high demand across the US. In fact, now is the perfect time to get into the trade.

But is it lucrative? That’s probably one of the big questions on your mind.

And it’s a valid consideration, too, when switching professions. The salary figures should tell you whether a career in appliance repair is worth it.

So, how much do appliance repair technicians make?

This article has the answer. Read on as we discuss the following points:

The average salary of appliance repair technicians in the US

How appliance repair technician training and certification impact earning potential

Specializations within the appliance repair profession

Outlook of the appliance repair trade

Quick tips to get started in appliance repair

Let’s dive in.

Average Salary of Appliance Repair Technicians

We’ll start by looking at the average salaries for appliance repair technicians. This should give you a ballpark figure of what appliance repair technicians earn.

According to ZipRecruiter, appliance technicians make anywhere between $12.74 and $36.54 in hourly wages. However, most repair technicians earn $19.23 to $27.88 an hour. The mean average wage is $24/hour, which amounts to $50,661 per year.

Why such a wide range of salaries?

Well, salary variability is not necessarily a bad thing. The wide gap between the highest and the lowest earners suggests opportunities for increased pay.

Repair technician salaries vary mainly based on skill level and experience. As a newbie learning the trade, you’ll likely make less than the average wage. And as you work up the ranks, you’ll attract higher-paying jobs or roles.

Looking at data from the US Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reveals some interesting trends. According to the BLS, home appliance repairers earn, on average, $24.35/ hour. That’s on par with ZipRecruiter’s estimates. However, the BLS points out that earnings vary widely depending on location and specialization.

For instance, repairers working for the natural gas distribution industry can pocket as much as $43.01 an hour.

Additionally, some states are more lucrative for appliance repairers than others. At $28.91, New Jersey has the highest hourly mean wage for appliance repair technicians. Meanwhile, appliance repairers in Nebraska earn a mean wage of $17.52 an hour. That’s an astonishing $11.39/hour difference between the two states.

What can we learn from these figures?

Here’s one important takeaway:

The salary of an appliance repair technician is not set in stone. Your earning potential hinges on a number of factors, most of which are under your control.

For one, you can increase your earning potential by upskilling. Start off on a high skill level by learning the trade through formal training or hands-on apprenticeship. (More on this below.)

Secondly, consider the location. Practice the trade in a state, city, or town with a high demand for appliance repair technicians. That’s where you’ll earn the most, even as a rookie.

The Financial Impact of Appliance Repair Training and Certificates

We’ve mentioned that skill level influences your earning potential as an appliance repair technician. Like with all trades, the higher your skill level, the more you earn.

The easiest way to learn appliance repair is through apprenticeship. Some appliance manufacturers, electrical companies, and home services contractors are always eager to hire helpers. As a helper, you’ll likely work under an experienced technician. There, you’ll earn appliance repair skills through on-the-job experience.

After about a year of working as a helper, you’ll have learned enough to take on repair jobs unsupervised. Technician apprenticeship normally takes six months to a year. But of course, the learning period varies from person to person. Also, some employers are keener than others to fast-track trainees into qualified technicians.

Alternatively, you could go for formal training. There are countless vocational training institutes offering world-class technician courses. But ideally, enroll with a school approved by the Professional Service Association (PSA) or the North American Equipment Dealers Association (NAEDA).

Appliance repair training typically takes one or two years, depending on the course.

NASTeC Certification

Whether you’ve trained through apprenticeship or formal education, you must pass a certification exam. You’ll need a NASTeC certificate to qualify as an appliance repair technician. NASTeC stands for National Appliance Service Technician Certification.

The International Society of Certified Electronics Technicians (ISCET) administers, scores, and analyzes NASTeC exams. NASTeC certification has four levels:

Refrigeration and Air Conditioning*

Cooking

Laundry and Dishwashing

Universal Technician (all three specialties plus basic skills)

*Requires proof of EPA Refrigerant Recovery Certification. Additionally, you will need state licensing to work as an HVAC technician.

To earn a NASTeC certification, you must pass the basic skills exam and at least one specialty exam.

Passing any of the three specialty exams gets you a “recognition of achievement.” After passing all four exams, you become a Certified NASTeC Universal Technician. That’s the highest level of recognition in the trade and also the highest paying.

EPA Technician Certification

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) also certifies appliance repair technicians. It approves technicians to work on appliances containing chlorofluorocarbons (CFC) refrigerants. The certifications are in accordance with Section 608 of the Clean Air Act.

CFCs are harmful to the environment. When released into the atmosphere, CFCs rise high in the stratosphere. Once there, they deplete the UV-protection ozone layer.

Naturally, technicians must be educated and tested on handling such hazardous chemicals.

The EPA awards four types of technician certifications:

Type I — Servicing small appliances. Type I appliances fit a very specific description. They must be hermetically sealed, factory charged, and contain 5 lb. or less of refrigerant.

Type II — Servicing high-pressure appliances.

Type III — Servicing low-pressure appliances.

Universal — Servicing all types of CFC-refrigerated appliances.

You must pass all three exams to earn EPA’s Universal Technician Certification. The certification qualifies you to work on any refrigerated appliances. Having a universal certificate expands your job scope and earning capacity.

The Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers (AHAM) and North American Retail Dealers Association (NARDA) award a similar certification. The NARDA/AHAM TYPE I CFC Certification is for technicians who recover refrigerant from Type 1 appliances. Again, this certification unlocks refrigerant-related jobs, widening your job pool and earning potential.

PSA Certification

The Professional Service Association (PSA) offers five types of technician certifications:

Certified Master Technician

A Master Certification awards excellence in the following areas:

Consumer relations

Core skills

Cooling appliances

Convenience appliances

Cleaning appliances

Cooking appliances (gas)

Cooking appliances (electric)

Cooking appliances (microwave)

Master Technician Certification is pretty demanding. You must complete all eight skill modules with a passing grade of at least 75%.

Certified Technician

To become a Certified Technician, you must pass at least three skill modules. The first two, the Core and Consumer modules, are mandatory. For the third module, you can choose any one you like.

In addition to the Core and Consumer modules, you’ll be certified in any other module you pass.

Certified Graduate Technician

This certification is awarded to vocational institution graduates after they pass their exams. It certifies the completion of formal appliance repair training in PSA-approved schools.

After working in the trade for two years, you can go for a Master Technician Certificate. But you’ll, of course, have to pass the Master Technician exam first.

Certified Consumer Specialist

This certification is primarily meant for non-technical personnel. Although, there’s no harm in getting it. In fact, it might come in handy should you choose to become an independent technician.

It awards excellence in people skills, morals, and ethics.

Certified Service Manager

This certification recognizes the skills needed to provide support in service management. It certifies that the holder can handle management tasks. In this case, management tasks span from employee/customer relations and marketing to financial management.

PSA technician certifications expand your job scope. You’ll definitely earn more as a Certified Master Technician than, say, just a Certified Technician. Plus, you could dabble in non-technical skills such as business management. Such additional skills are always a plus on your resume and pay slip.

Here’s a final pro tip: managing an appliance repair business is so much easier with appliance repair software. They may not teach you this in school, but it’s very true.

Specialization Within Appliance Repair

Technician specialization is a big deal. But let’s get the basics out of the way first.

What exactly does an appliance repair technician do?

You’ll likely travel to people’s homes, commercial establishments, schools, and hospitals to fix broken appliances. For most appliance repair technicians, that’s what the job entails. Alternatively, you can work in-house at an appliance manufacturing plant or distribution outlet.

Most appliance repair technicians specialize in one type of appliance. For instance, one can specialize in smart appliances, entertainment appliances, or kitchen appliances. Meanwhile, some technicians focus on products from a single manufacturer.

Does technician specialization affect earnings?

Yes, and in a big way.

Different specializations have different complexities. Some repair work may require specialized knowledge, skills, or tools. The higher the job’s complexity, the more you can charge for repair services.

Here’s a look at four main appliance repair specializations and how they affect earnings:

RELATED ARTICLE: What Is an HVAC Technician’s Salary?

Residential Appliance Repair Technician

Residential appliance repair technicians install, service, and fix household appliances. These are your everyday refrigerators, washing machines, ovens, sound systems, etc.

This is the most common appliance repair specialization. In other words, the space is pretty crowded. So, you’ll likely earn the average base salary of an appliance repair technician.

Commercial Appliance Repair Technician

Commercial appliance repairers work on commercial appliances. These are the sorts of appliances you’ll find in restaurants, schools, offices, laundromats, etc.

Appliances built for commercial use are larger and more complex. These require specialized knowledge and skills to repair. Technicians must also take extra care and precautions when handling commercial appliances.

As you might have guessed, commercial technicians earn more than residential technicians. It’s hard to say exactly how much more, as the pay difference will depend on the complexity of each job.

Factory Appliance Repair Technician

These are technicians who specialize in particular appliance brands. Usually, they go for major brands such as Samsung, LG, GE, and Phillips.

To become a factory appliance technician, you must be trained on that particular brand of appliances. Other requirements may include passing an exam, certification, or endorsement.

Working as a factory appliance repair technician is a pretty rewarding gig. The pay is exceptionally high when working under the manufacturer themself. Job listings for brand specialists promise as much as $72/hour.

Medical Appliance Repair Technician

This specialization deals with clinical equipment and appliances.

You have to jump through several hoops to become a medical appliance technician. First, you’ll need a host of skills and certifications in biomedical technology. Also, it takes a while to learn the trade.

But despite being a demanding profession, it may not be as rewarding as you might expect. A medical appliance repair technician’s average hourly wage is $20. That’s below the industry’s national average of $24/hour.

National Outlook of the Appliance Repair Industry

Salaries aside, is appliance repair a stable industry?

You certainly don’t want to gamble with your career. So, ensure you understand the industry before you take that leap.

Fortunately, appliance repair is a thriving industry. Appliance repair jobs are here to stay, as these industry stats confirm:

The US appliance repair market has grown at a 1.9% compound annual growth rate (CAGR) over the past five years. Its estimated value in 2024 will be $6.5 billion. (IBISWorld)

The industry is home to 36,004 businesses and employs 58,440 employees. (IBISWorld)

Over 17,000 new appliance repair jobs are projected over the next 10 years. (Zippia)

So, what’s keeping this industry afloat?

There are three main reasons for a flourishing and future-proof appliance repair market:

We have more tech in our homes and businesses today than ever before. For example, you’ll find smart appliances everywhere you look. These sophisticated devices need skilled people to ensure they run smoothly.

The shift toward sustainable practices raises the demand for repair services. Sustainability ethos, such as e-waste reduction and resource conservation, favor appliance repairers.

People are becoming more aware of the benefits of repairing appliances. The consumerist culture in the US is slowly dying down. Americans are becoming more cautious with their spending. “Repair, not replace” is a big part of this new-found cautious spending.

Start gathering as many technician certifications as possible.

Choose an appliance repair specialization that aligns with your income goals.

Appliance repair is a stable profession with even greater opportunities for growth in the future. If you’ve wondered how to become an appliance repair technician, this post is for you.

Learn more about the predicted trajectory of this career. Get the 7 essential steps to enter the field, as well as salary information about the appliance repair industry.

We’ll wrap up with practical tips you can use right away to begin your appliance repair journey.

The Daily Work of an Appliance Repair Technician

Appliance repair technicians fix, install, and adjust appliances for homeowners and businesses. Occasionally, this work is performed in a central location, like a repair shop. But it mostly involves traveling to the home or business to do repairs on-site.

People in this profession can choose from multiple specialties, such as general appliance repair or electronics repair.

Certification is required for certain specialties, which we’ll discuss in more detail below.

What’s a typical day like for an appliance repair technician?

Usually, you’ll have a list of repair or installation orders each day from people who have called ahead to schedule appointments. For instance, you might install a washer and dryer first thing in the morning.

Then you fix an electric stove before lunch. You finish up the day by doing maintenance in the laundry room in an apartment complex for a property management company.

You may also have to squeeze in some emergency calls. For example, a customer might call you because their washing machine is leaking water all over the basement and causing damage.

If you work for an appliance repair company, you’ll likely be dispatched by the owner or someone who handles appointments. Many businesses today use service business software to assist with this.

Larger companies try to work as efficiently as possible by scheduling each technician in a certain geographic area. This minimizes downtime and travel expenses for greater profitability.

You might go into business for yourself. In that case, you have more leeway with scheduling. But you’ll still want to shoot for the most efficient routing possible. You may also schedule jobs around picking up parts. Or you might be working with other contractors like electricians, plumbers, and remodelers.

Outlook for the Appliance Repair Industry

You might be pleasantly surprised to know that the outlook for the appliance repair industry is positive. In fact, many areas are experiencing a shortage of workers in this field.

Starting in the 1990s, American high school students were encouraged to pursue four-year degrees. Education was focused on careers outside construction and the trade industries. That resulted in a deficit of repair technicians that has persisted today.

These statistics about opportunities and industry growth are quite promising:

Job growth rate is projected at 8% from 2018 to 2028.

The above figure represents over 17,000 new jobs.

Over the last five years, salaries in this field have increased 11%.

There are over 70,000 job openings currently in the USA.

You can read more about appliance repair technician earning potential in the next section.

Earning Potential of Appliance Repair Technicians

The specialty you choose is one factor that affects your salary as an appliance repair technician. The more specialty training and certification you receive, the greater your earning potential.

Installing and repairing appliances has become a more skilled profession in the last decade or so. This is because more appliances use complex internal computer systems or may be connected to the Internet of Things (IoT). Being well educated in these areas can command a higher salary.

Other factors that influence earnings include:

Geographic location by state and city

Years of experience

Type and size of employer

Union membership and collective bargaining

Being self-employed and owning your own business also affects how much income you can bring in. On the one hand, you have to cover your business expenses, like:

Office and/or vehicle

Payroll for staff and employees

Equipment and tools

Insurance and licensing

Miscellaneous fees

But if you have a large enough client base, you can pay those costs and still make a nice profit. Even better, you can expand your business once you have experience and a stable roster of customers. Theoretically, your profits are unlimited.

Let’s talk a little more about how location affects your earnings.

In general, locations with a higher cost of living offer better salaries for appliance repair technicians. According to ZipRecruiter, the average salary across the United States is $48,621. That includes more experienced technicians and those who are just starting out.

Alaska is the highest-paying state, with an average of $53,077 per year or $25.52 per hour. This is probably influenced by the state’s remote location and a higher demand for repair technicians.

Florida is the lowest-paying state. The average salary is $33,156 per year or $15.94 per hour.

That hourly rate is below the minimum wage in California. There, appliance repair technicians average $44,919 annually or $21.60 per hour. So, state minimum wage laws are also a factor.

These states round out the top 10 highest salaries for appliance repair technicians after Alaska:

Oregon

North Dakota

Massachusetts

Washington

Hawaii

Nevada

Colorado

South Dakota

Iowa

Which states are in the bottom 10 above Florida?

West Virginia

Louisiana

Georgia

Arkansas

Tennessee

Alabama

Montana

Arizona

Michigan

Are you beginning your career as an appliance repair technician? It may pay to move to a state with higher salaries if that’s feasible for you.

7 Steps to Become an Appliance Repair Technician

Becoming an appliance repair technician is achievable for most people. The key is approaching the process methodically and knowing what’s required for your area of interest. Here are the steps you need to take to enter this career:

Decide Which Specialty Interests You

You may wish to be a general appliance technician or enter a niche field. Which appeals to you more?

On the one hand, you may see more variety in your day-to-day work as a general technician. And if you intend to work in a rural area, you may need to be more of a generalist to meet customer demand.

On the other hand, specialists who work in unique areas usually earn a little more. That’s because more training and experience is required. It takes more to get started, but it’s an investment.

You might also have a passion for a certain type of appliance repair. If you enjoy washing machine repair, becoming LG Certified or Whirlpool Certified is a great move.

Or maybe you know employers in your area are keen to hire some specialties. You want to know the jobs are there once you finish training and certification.

One more question: would you rather work in domestic or commercial appliance repair? Industrial appliances are often different from their home counterparts. Do you want to work in commercial refrigerator repair, for example? You should be ready to handle the kinds of fridges you’ll find in commercial kitchens.

Obtain the Required Education and Training

To start, you’ll need at least a high school diploma. If you don’t have one, you should get your GED (a high school equivalency diploma).

Vocational training comes next. Which program or programs you choose will depend on what’s available in your town and what type of work you want to do.

Some of the most popular curricula include:

Appliance Repair Vocational Training

This is a general diagnostics and repair program found in many technical schools.

Electronics Training

This is training in the analysis and repair of circuits related to appliances. It includes wiring diagrams and electrical schematics.

Many appliance repair technicians add training in areas like plumbing. This makes them more marketable. It also usually helps when it comes to earning more money.

Check Certification and Licensing Requirements, as Needed

You may need official certification or licensing, depending on your:

Area of specialty

State laws

Municipal regulations

In California, for instance, you need a license to be an appliance repair technician anywhere in the state. This involves:

Completing a training course

Working under a licensed technician

Providing proof of insurance and bonding

Passing a background check

Passing a written exam

Submitting an application

Paying the application fee

Conversely, Florida has no such statewide requirement. However, some municipalities have their own unique licensing laws. Therefore, you need to check with your state and local governments to see what laws govern your work.

Gain Field Experience

Say your state doesn’t require appliance repair experience for a license. It’s still smart to get as much as you can under your belt.

How do you do that? There are several paths you can take:

Internships during appliance repair training

Apprenticeships with experienced repair companies

Getting hired as an entry-level employee and working your way up

The last two above are very similar. However, an apprenticeship is typically a more formal agreement where you agree to stay with the company in return for training.

Your school may have an alumni association or partnership program to help you connect with opportunities. Other ways to find openings include:

Appliance repair technician union or trade association

Online advertisements posted by local companies

Word of mouth via local appliance repair businesses

Make Sure You’re Able to Drive Legally

You need to be able to drive for most appliance repair technician jobs. So, you’ll need a valid driver’s license for your state.

You will also be required to have a clean driving record. If there’s any question about this, your state Department of Motor Vehicles can check your record for you.

Don’t rack up any points or moving violations if you intend to stay employed in this field. Whether you work for yourself or someone else, you’ll need to be able to drive to your clients’ job sites.

Participate in Continuing Education

Appliance repair is constantly changing to keep up with the latest technology. The most successful appliance repair technicians at all levels share one thing. They stay current with new trends via continuing education.

Some growing trends in appliance repair include:

Environmentally friendly refrigerant options

Remote diagnostics using camera and video input

Appliance integration with automated systems

Smart appliances and the IoT

Augmented reality assistance on repair jobs

There are conferences and classes you can take. And there are also thousands of DIY learning experiences online nowadays. These walk you through new appliance models and repair techniques.

Enhance Your Business Skills

No matter how great your appliance repair skills are, it helps to have solid business skills, too. These include:

Marketing and sales

Customer relations

Billing and accounting

Mobile technology

Appliance repair business software

You can be an asset to your employer by understanding how to improve customer satisfaction. And these skills will help you be more profitable when running your own shop.

Appliance Repair: Where to Start

Ready to get started on the journey to become an appliance repair technician? Here are some final expert tips for the best possible outcome:

In looking for the best training program, ask local companies with good reputations where their techs are trained. Find out if there is a waiting list to enroll so you can sign up as soon as possible.

You want to train or apprentice with the highest-quality companies in your area. How do you know who they are? Read Google and Yelp reviews online for your city. Or go to your community’s Facebook group page to see who members recommend to each other.

Do you need help funding your training program? Inquire about the possibility of scholarships or employer funding before taking out a loan. You may be able to get the bulk of your education paid for without a future financial burden.

Don’t forget to get insurance, even if your state doesn’t require it. Liability insurance covers you if you damage a customer’s property or cause an injury. Property insurance protects your tools and equipment. If you use your personal vehicle for work, you’ll want a commercial auto policy.

Card payments are increasingly popular. The U.S. Federal Reserve found that 73% of Americans prefer paying with credit or debit cards. Only 19% of people preferred cash. Point-of-sale terminals can handle these transactions in regular retail settings. But what about field service technicians who work in the field?

Service technicians who are out in the field can’t use traditional retail payment terminals. Instead, they need mobile payment solutions to process customers’ payments. In this article, we’ll explore these payment options. We will look at the limits of other payment methods and explore the pros of mobile processing.

We will then delve into setting up mobile payment systems. And we’ll cover integrating these solutions with standard payment software. You’ll also discover the best ways to train employees on these new systems. Finally, we’ll give you tips to help you take the first steps in setting up your mobile payment solution.

Understanding the Need for Mobile Payment Solutions in Field Services

The mobile card reader market is growing. In 2022, it was worth $10 billion worldwide. That figure is projected to increase to $65 billion by 2032. Why such impressive growth? One of the reasons is the limitations of traditional payment methods such as cash and checks.

Here are the drawbacks of having field technicians rely on traditional payments:

Security risks: Technicians may be less secure when accepting large cash payments. They may have to carry this cash to their other appointments for the day.

Payment delays: It may take time to process check payments. Also, because of the delay, you are unsure if the payment will go through. For example, there is a risk that the check could bounce.

Lack of integration: It’s harder to track cash and checks. You cannot integrate these traditional payments into accounting software. Instead, you often have to enter amounts by hand. This increases the amount of time you’ll have to spend on bookkeeping.

Inconvenience: Your customers may find paying by cash or check inconvenient. 46% of Americans didn’t write a single check in 2023. Many of these people don’t even have a checkbook anymore. They may find it inconvenient to get cash to pay for your services.

Administrative burdens: It takes time for your office staff to generate, send, and follow up on invoices. These bottlenecks can lead to payment delays.

Mobile payment solutions can help you avoid these issues. You’ll be able to streamline workflows, operate more efficiently, and increase cash flow.

The Benefits of Mobile Payment Solutions

Here are the benefits you can expect after you set up your mobile payments system:

Better security: Mobile payment processors encrypt payment information. Hackers cannot see the financial details during the transaction. Also, your technicians won’t have to carry cash in their vehicles.

Processing speed: You and the customer can confirm that the payment went through in a few seconds. You can ask them for an alternative payment if their first choice does not go through.

Customer satisfaction: Customers can pay you with whatever method they prefer, such as a credit card or even a mobile wallet such as Google Pay or Apple Wallet. This leads to a better overall customer experience.

Easier bookkeeping: You can automate record-keeping. The system will send transaction data to your bookkeeping software. You won’t ever have to enter payment totals manually.

These benefits have led to the increased use of mobile card readers in many industries.

Setting Up Mobile Payment Solutions for Technicians

You’ll need to take several steps when setting up payment solutions for your field techs. The first factor is finding a payment processing system that meets your needs. Solutions for the field have different qualities than store-based point-of-sale terminals.

Here are the factors you’ll need to think about when making this choice:

User interface: The system should be intuitive. In other words, technicians should be able to use it without much training.

Number of payment options: The payment solution should accept credit and debit cards. But you can also consider payment apps like Apple Pay. Technicians will be able to accept any type of payment customers want to use.

Customization: See if you can change aspects of the payment system to meet your needs. For instance, check if the system allows you to change prices or add promotional rates. You should be able to make these changes easily from a central interface.

Finally, you should look at the customer support options. Technicians should be able to contact the payment company easily at any time. And they should be able to get basic support immediately regardless of the time.

Pay Special Attention to Compatibility

Compatibility is one of the most important factors to consider. The payment solution should work with different devices. It should also function on different operating systems.

For instance, check that it works on both Android and Apple (iOS) devices. Then, see if the system can handle different types of cards. These include contactless cards and standard cards with a magnetic strip. You will also need to consider chip cards that require the user to enter a PIN.

Also, you need to consider how the card reader connects to the device. Wired connections are available with a headphone jack or USB port. Some readers are wireless and pair with phones via Bluetooth. You’ll want to make sure the reader you choose is compatible with your technicians’ devices.

Get Feedback from Your Technicians

You should involve your technicians in the decision-making process. They are the ones who will use the payment systems. Ask which devices they are comfortable using, and get insights about which payment types customers prefer to use.

Also, listen to your technicians’ concerns. Perhaps they are worried about the security of the card reader. Or they want to be sure customers will understand how to use the payment system intuitively.

Take these concerns and feedback into account when choosing your mobile payment solution. Incorporating what you hear from your techs will make them happier in the field and give them more time to focus on your growing business.

Integrating Card Readers with Payment Software

You will need to choose the hardware and point-of-sale system. But you’ll also need payment processing software. Your payment processor takes the data from the card reader and sends it to the bank.

The software should provide you with the features you need. These might include the ability to save prices for different services or an interface that allows technicians to make detailed bills or invoices.

These features can help your technicians look more professional. And customers will appreciate this detail, as they will be able to see a list of services and the cost of each.

Setting Up a Payment Processing Gateway

Another key component you’ll need to set up is a payment processing gateway. This platform handles the middle step in payment processing. It takes the data from the card reader and mobile device. Then, it verifies the information and checks that the account has enough funds. This saves you from processing payments that won’t go through.

Gateways also increase security. They help encrypt information. This means that no one can see the data while it goes between the mobile payment terminal and the bank.

Most importantly, the gateway speeds up the payment process. It automates many of the steps. After the customer swipes, inserts, or taps their card, the software and gateway take over. They automatically check and send the information, and they verify it quickly.

FROM ONE OF OUR PARTNERS: How to Accept Credit Card Payments on My Phone

Training Your Techs on Using Card Readers Effectively

Your technicians need to be comfortable using the payment processing system. First, you should get feedback to learn about their needs and concerns. Take these into account when selecting the system.

After you choose a payment processing option, the next step is to train the users. This step is vital. Technicians have to be comfortable using the mobile payment solution without guidance. They will have to use it alone in the field.

Also, customers may need guidance to make the payment. Your techs need to know the system well enough to show the customer how to use it.

You can start by offering instructions. Then, give your employees a chance to practice. Use demo transactions or make small transactions. This allows techs to gain confidence using the system. And they have a chance to ask questions and correct mistakes.

Ensure Security and Compliance

Pre-roll-out testing and training also lets you fine-tune security. Here are some tips for ensuring the financial information is secure during transactions in the field:

Use multi-factor authentication and secure logins. This ensures others can’t access the mobile devices and see payment information.

Ensure the system complies with the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS). This is required for businesses processing payments.

Verify that the payment system uses end-to-end encryption to protect data during the transaction.

Make policies to manage mobile devices. For instance, create rules to keep technicians from downloading dangerous apps or malware. Hackers can use these to gain access to your payment system.

Also, consider state and local rules about data privacy and payment security. These vary and could require more steps than the PCI DSS.

3 Tips to Get Started with Mobile Payment Solutions

You don’t need to get a mobile payment solution right away. But you can take steps to start the process of choosing the right option. Here are three tips for getting started today:

Look for demos. Some companies may offer demo accounts. Or they could let you and your techs try the payment processing system before you buy it.

Talk to customers. See what solutions your customers would prefer. They may be more comfortable with certain brands or device types. Use these insights to narrow down your choices.

Gauge fees. All payment processing systems charge fees. This is usually a percentage of the transaction. Learn how much these costs are for each option you are considering.

With these steps, you can set the stage for choosing the best mobile payment solution for your needs.
